National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 by a Proclamation from President Richard Nixon and has since been bolstered and expanded upon by subsequent administrations. President George H. W. Bush famously declared volunteers “points of lights” by his formal recognition of their service to their neighbors. The week is an opportunity to recognize the key role that volunteerism plays in our nation, states, and communities.
